Your impact report 2021/22

Introduction

Over the 21/22 academic year, I have been delighted to see our University bustling with students once more. Though the difficulties of the past two years cannot be underestimated, I can’t help but feel the enthusiasm and excitement of our staff and students as I walk around a campus filled with activity once again.

You, our supporters, have been such an important part of that return to normality. Against a backdrop of emergence from the pandemic, a tough economic climate and humanitarian crises across the globe, our friends, alumni and supporters have shown incredible kindness and compassion, offering their time, money and insights to help support our students and our York community through an immensely challenging period.

We can see just how challenging it is as requests for support from our students have continued to increase, as the cost of living crisis bites. I fear those requests are only going to grow yet more. Thankfully, your philanthropy has enabled us to respond to this need.

As you will read in this impact report, we were able to offer more York Opportunity Scholarships than ever before in the 21/22 academic year, because of the support of our incredible donors. This has enabled students who had to contend with significant barriers to their education to get into university and realise their potential. We were also able to offer financial support and fee waivers through our Equal Access Fund to nine students affected by the war in Ukraine. And the Great York Walk raised vital funds for Mentally Fit York, our fund to support grassroots mental health projects and the latest research.

It is a real delight to report that in February this year we reached an incredible milestone in York Unlimited, our fundraising campaign for York, topping £100 million in donations and 100,000 volunteer hours.

Each of the examples I’ve listed are tremendous achievements in themselves. But what strikes me most is what they mean in the round: that amongst all the disruptions we have gone through, you, our supporters, have helped to keep the doors to life-changing education and research open.

Thank you.

Professor Charlie Jeffery, Vice-Chancellor and President

Enabling every student to shine

A key priority of the York Unlimited Campaign is to enable every student to shine. We want to help students overcome barriers by offering scholarships to talented students who may otherwise struggle.

The York Opportunity Scholarship provides financial support to students who have faced significant challenges in their personal, social and domestic life. We are currently receiving record high numbers of applications for the York Opportunity Scholarship, a number which is growing each year. Thanks to the kindness of our alumni, friends and supporters, we were able to offer 96 students a York Opportunity Scholarship in the 21/22 academic year, more than ever before. The effects of Covid-19 and the current economic climate have meant that many students from less advantaged backgrounds have had to face the difficult decision as to whether or not to enrol at university. These scholarships help to level the playing field, ensuring that students from all backgrounds are able to access a York education and reach their potential.

“Thanks to this scholarship, I had less burden on my shoulders financially, and I could focus on my studies better. I am more than appreciative of your support.”
Tugba, York Opportunity Scholar

The Equal Access Scholarship enables students seeking asylum to access a university education and find safety and sanctuary whilst they are here. Every year, with the help of our wonderful donors, we are able to offer scholarships to two undergraduate students and one postgraduate student. These scholarships are critical in helping these students to achieve their dreams. In the 21/22 academic year, we were able to extend our Equal Access Fund to support 6 students fleeing Afghanistan. We were also able to offer support to 9 students affected by the Russia-Ukraine crisis, who began their studies in the 22/23 academic year. We are so grateful to our supporters who have enabled us to offer help to those in crisis.

“This scholarship helped me to escape the Taliban government and come to the UK to continue my higher education. Your donation saved my life. Thank you very much for your heartfelt contribution.”
Ali, Equal Access Scholar

We were delighted to partner with the Aziz Foundation to offer the Aziz Foundation Scholarships. These postgraduate scholarships support exceptional students from British Muslim backgrounds, who wish to advance in their careers and bring positive change to their communities and beyond. The first Aziz Scholars began their studies in the 22/23 academic year. We are honoured to partner with Aziz to support the leaders of tomorrow.

In the 21/22 academic year, over 350 students were being supported by scholarships across the University, all of which were funded by kind gifts from individuals, businesses and charitable donations. We are so grateful to all of our supporters who are helping to build a brighter future for our students.

The University of York was founded on the belief that opening up the opportunity to go to university matters more than almost anything else. The University is deeply committed to encouraging talented young people, regardless of background, to meet their full potential. This year, we partnered with IntoUniversity and the University of Hull to establish three new learning centres for children growing up in East Hull, Bridlington and East Marsh Grimsby. These learning centres will support low-income students to defy the odds stacked against them, and realise the futures they may never have dreamed possible. This will be achieved through academic support, enrichment, mentoring and workshops to encourage young people to think about their future. The Hull East Centre opened in September 2022, and we are so thankful to our supporters who have helped to make this possible.

Developing a Mentally Fit York

On Saturday 28th May 2022, 121 alumni, staff, students, and friends of the University joined together to take on The Great York Walk, including York’s very own Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Charlie Jeffery. An astonishing £22,000 was raised for Mentally Fit York, our fund to support on the ground initiatives and the latest ground-breaking research to improve mental health for everyone. We were delighted to see so many of our supporters taking on the 10km, 20km or the full 40km (25 mile) route, at our first in-person walk since Covid-19.

The Great York Walk is back in 2023 and will take place on Saturday 3 June.

Mental Health Nursing Scholarship

The Mental Health Nursing Scholarship offers financial support to students studying to become mental health nurses. These scholarships help to ease worries about the cost of living for students, enabling them to spend more time focusing on their training. This support is vital to ensuring that more students can continue their studies to become the next generation of mental health nurses, who will care for and support those facing mental ill health. Thanks to the kindness of our donors, we were able to offer Mental Health Nursing Scholarships to 6 students in the 21/22 academic year.

“The scholarship has been a blessing to me. It has made my financial burdens a little bit less. I am very thankful to the donor who assisted me with the scholarship, this changed my life.
Loyce, Mental Health Nursing Scholar

Groundbreaking research

Throughout the 21/22 academic year, we continued to build on our strong relationships with our corporate and charitable partners to deliver exciting and world-changing research. Some highlights of the year include working with the Sir Jules Thorne Trust to expand the remit of our Translational Haematology Unit and partnering with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on multiple projects to push forward the eradication of key diseases in Africa and beyond. A new project generously supported by the abrdn Financial Fairness Trust has also seen us deliver research focused on transforming social security for low-income families, in a post-pandemic world.

Alongside supporting the development of knowledge, our focus in 21/22 saw a renewed commitment to widening access and participation in academic and research careers alongside key partners such as the Daphne Jackson Trust, the ONAOSI Foundation and Wesleyan Assurance Society. The work done here to bring more experiences and insights in the world of research is fundamental to keeping York’s research relevant, reflective and informed.

Leaving a legacy

Leaving a gift in your will can help to support students and fund life-changing research, leaving a lasting impact for generations to come. Thanks to a generous legacy gift from Thomas Gordon Reid, the Reid Scholarship was established to support students in their study, research and travel in the field of worldwide archaeology. The scholarship is in memory of Thomas and his brother, David Julian Reid.

The first Reid Scholarship was awarded to first year PhD student, Leila, in the 21/22 academic year, who was “incredibly excited for this opportunity to contribute to our understanding of field-based digital recording techniques and their impact on our perceptions and dissemination of archaeology.”

We are also incredibly grateful to Mark Stevens, whose thoughtful and generous legacy gift will support History students during their studies here at York and champion their college participation. The first scholarship was awarded at the start of the 22/23 academic year.
