On behalf of my colleagues, I am delighted that you are considering a career with us.

The Department of History at York is more than just a collection of scholars; we are a dynamic, inquisitive, and deeply supportive community. We have long been recognised as one of the UK’s premier centers for historical study, but our true pride lies in our commitment to the future—supporting the next generation of historians as they challenge established narratives and forge new paths of inquiry.

Whether your expertise lies in the medieval, early modern, or contemporary eras, you will find a home here that values interdisciplinary collaboration and social impact.

Why York?

The Department of history

The Department of History at the University of York is one of the largest and most cosmopolitan departments of its kind in Europe. We are a member of the Russell Group, recognized internationally for our "unmatched breadth" of study. Our expertise spans the globe - from the Americas and the Caribbean to Asia and Africa - and reaches across the centuries, from the early Middle Ages to the contemporary era.

Research Excellence with Impact
We are a global research powerhouse, ranked 3rd in the UK for research impact (REF 2021). Our work doesn't just reside in archives; it shapes public policy and tackles global inequalities. We benefit from world-class resources, including the on-campus Borthwick Institute for Archives and our renowned interdisciplinary research centers.

A Collaborative Scholarly Community
We pride ourselves on a culture of "disagreeing well." We are a collegiate community that values rigorous debate, intellectual freedom, and mutual respect. This spirit of collaboration extends to our partnerships with national institutions like the British Library and York Minster.

Committed to Inclusion
Diversity is central to our identity. An Athena Swan Bronze Award holder, the department is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where research into race, gender, and social justice thrives, and where every staff member is supported in their professional growth.

A University for Public Good

The University of York was founded on principles of excellence, equality and opportunity for all. Since opening in 1963 with just 230 students, we have grown into a global institution with more than 20,000 students across over 30 academic departments and research centres.

Our vision is to be a university for public good, reflected in four strategic objectives:

  • Deliver curiosity-driven and action-orientated research
  • Provide education that empowers
  • Create a community without limits
  • Demonstrate local commitment on a global scale

These commitments shape our culture and guide our work across teaching, research and partnership development.

Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy, developed in partnership with our staff and student communities, sets out our commitment to:

  • Recruiting and retaining a more ethnically diverse staff and student body
  • Creating an accessible and inclusive campus

We are seeking colleagues who share this vision and who are committed to advancing inclusivity in research, education and partnership work.
