YORK SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE jobs
University of York
Why we're recruiting
The new School of Architecture is one of the University of York’s exciting transformational initiatives. The School’s expertise is interdisciplinary, building on York’s research strengths in culture, community, computation, AI systems, environment and geography, heritage and social policy. These strengths have influenced the creation of a school that supports our University’s commitment to public good - to develop a professional architecture education for public good.
The new School has been developing curriculum and a staff team over the last year and students started the new undergraduate curriculum in September 2025. In addition we have a growing cohort of PhD students who started in April 2025.
The School is engaging with the City of York as a place for students and staff to develop place-based responses to architecture and contextual urban design. There are many intersections to departments in the University related to research and design practice and there are emerging themes of Heritage and Urban Design, Communities and Placemaking, and Sustainable Cities and Architecture that are informing the design of our curriculum and our research context.
We are welcoming new staff and colleagues to add to the breadth of academic and practice based expertise to be part of the development of the new School of Architecture in York.

York School of Architecture
The York School of Architecture blends interdisciplinary teaching with research that explores the possibilities of responsible design.
We engage with communities to better understand developmental and environmental challenges. As a heritage city, York's ongoing restoration and evolution offers a unique context for teaching, research and collaboration. A University for Public Good
The University of York was founded on principles of excellence, equality and opportunity for all. Since opening in 1963 with just 230 students, we have grown into a global institution with more than 20,000 students across over 30 academic departments and research centres.
Our vision is to be a university for public good, reflected in four strategic objectives:
- Deliver curiosity-driven and action-orientated research
- Provide education that empowers
- Create a community without limits
- Demonstrate local commitment on a global scale
These commitments shape our culture and guide our work across teaching, research and partnership development.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
Our Vision
Our university emerged from a campaign in this city in the 1940s and 1950s to ‘contribute to the amelioration of human life and conditions.’ Our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion is more important - and urgent - than ever, and so is at the heart of our 2030 Strategy.
Our Commitments
As a university that exists for public good, through purposeful action we are committed to equality of opportunity. Engendering inclusivity, and nurturing an environment where our students and staff can study, work and live in a community which fosters a sense of belonging, reflects our values and drive for demonstrable change.
What we gain from diversity is immeasurable. Our Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Strategy, which we developed in partnership with our staff and student communities, describes our commitment to create an inclusive environment where everyone can make a positive contribution to university life, the city, region and beyond. We are committed to recruit and retain a more ethnically diverse staff and student community; to create an accessible and inclusive campus, and embed the values and behaviours of inclusive responsibility and leadership.
We want to appoint colleagues who not only share our vision and purpose, but who have a genuine commitment to inclusivity in research, education, and partnerships. We see equality, diversity, and inclusion as critical to deliver on our extraordinary founding principles for the advancement of equity, diversity and inclusion for all.
