Securing financial resilience
Securing financial resilience
The experience of recent years has shown that we need greater financial resilience to protect against the volatility of the external environment in the short term and to allow investment in the infrastructure necessary to support our quality and purpose in the longer term.
To do this, we will target a recurring operating surplus of 7% of annual income.
York voices
What our community told us
“Even though I really like the campus, I feel like there are definitely some buildings and residences that could really do with some improvement.”
“We need to recognise and acknowledge good work, but when resources are tight, there is no head space to innovate or plan.”
“I choose reinvesting into the university through its research and also the campus; it’s already gorgeous and it's beautiful, but the upkeep of that is very important to me.”
“We need to come together to bring new big scale income streams into higher education and into York specifically, because the wider funding environment is cutting off traditional modes that we mostly used to make a surplus from."
“I get assignments on a certain platform. I have my timetables on another. I have an app for my digital cards. You have the VLE and york.ac.uk. So, if you had it all in one place, I just think it would be easier.”
“We have a real opportunity to think about the future… Let’s leverage our community and build that shared sense of purpose. Budgets and finance are important but they have work alongside innovation, and be clearer about what’s it all for.”
