EQUALITY DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

Our vision

Our University emerged from a campaign in this city in the 1940s and 1950s to ‘contribute to the amelioration of human life and conditions.’ Our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion is more important - and urgent - than ever, and so is at the heart of our 2030 Strategy.

As a university that exists for public good, through purposeful action we are committed to equality of opportunity. Engendering inclusivity, and nurturing an environment where our students and staff can study, work and live in a community which fosters a sense of belonging, reflects our values and drive for demonstrable change.

We are committed to recruiting colleagues who not only share our vision and purpose, but who have a genuine commitment to inclusivity and the advancement of equity, diversity and inclusion for all.

A University for Public Good

Founded on principles of excellence, equality and opportunity for all, the University of York opened in 1963 with just 230 students. In 2024 it is the home of more than 20,000 students across more than 30 academic departments and research centres.

Our vision is to be a university for public good and our strategy is built around our commitment to meeting four strategic objectives which are to:

Deliver curiosity-driven and action-orientated research
Embracing complexity and uncertainty that arise in an increasingly interconnected, rapidly changing world.

Provide education that empowers
Transforming the whole student experience to create high quality, flexible, inclusive and accessible lifelong learning journeys.

Create a community without limits
A diverse community that reflects both wider UK society and our principle of internationalism, fosters a sense of belonging, and operates at the highest academic and ethical standards.

Demonstrate local commitment on a global scale
By establishing an inclusive environment, removing barriers to progression for our staff and students, and creating physical, virtual and cultural spaces that facilitate rich exchanges, we transform perceptions and enable a culture of possibilities where new knowledge is generated and everyone can thrive.
